Ecologists visit some of the most interesting places on Earth, and many have fascinating tales to tell. These encounters can highlight important scientific concepts or lead to a better understanding of organisms or systems. In the new series, Trails and Tribulations, authors wil describe their experiences and discuss the associated environmental, ecological, or conservation issues. In the first article, Norm Christensen tells the story of a brief encounter he had while hiking in the mountains in Haiti and discusses the conflicting demands of environmental protection and human survival. © The Ecological Society of America.
