Planar lightwave circuit balanced optical fanout using a thin film photodetector array embedded in a polymer MMI coupler

The first multi-mode interface (MMI) coupler fabricated using a photoimageable polymer is demonstrated, as well as the first MMI coupler with thin film embedded photodetectors embedded in the output waveguide channels. The experimental results agree with the theory, showing a balanced output.
