Strontium was evaluated as a tracer for calcium in barnacles using electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPXMA). Barnacles were grown from laboratory-raised, free swimming cyprid larvae to adults on plastic coverslips in culture dishes of seawater. Cryopreserved barnacles were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and EPXMA dot mapping. Strontium levels greater than background in intact barnacles were detected in discrete bands in the opercular and wall plates and in central portions of the ala, paries and radius of an isolated lateral plate. The distribution of calcium did not affect the incorporation of strontium in both the intact barnacles and isolated plates.
