A communication-cognition program for elderly nursing home residents

The intellectual and communicative declines which are prevalent among nursing home residents can be counteracted. A program is presented which has helped elderly persons to achieve greater independence while increasing both their cognitive and expressive functioning. The effectiveness of the program rests on the commitment of administrators and staff to engage residents in substantive activities and on the resourceful use of volunteer aides.
