An integrated methodology is presented, based on a hierarchical package of computer models ranging from simple micro-computer programs to more complex mainframe simulation, to address the impact of water quality fluctuations in determining instream flow strategies. The models are applied to derive the frequency and duration of violations of established stream standards according to State stream use classifications. Both physically-based (deterministic) continuous models and statistically-based (derived distribution) models are compared for the same study site (Salem Creek, Winston-Salem, N. C. ) and hydrologoic time series (November 1980 to August 1981).
