The idea of producing neutral particles via fusion of virtual photons accompanying ultra-relaitivistic heavy ions is reviewed. In particular, the possibility that such a mechanism could provide a method for producing and detecting intermediate mass Higgs bosons (MZ ≲ MH ≲ 2MW) is discussed. © 1991.
