United States tuna policy: a critical assessment
The article first presents a general overview of the involvement of the US tuna fisheries, and in setting policy for and management of tuna fisheries. The general questions are: what is the total set of tuna-related large pelagics fisheries in which US fishermen are involved, and which therefore involve US interests and US policy; and what is the total set of tuna-related large pelagics fisheries that occur in the US EEZ, concerning which the US might make direct policies under the Magnuson Fisheries Conservation and Management Act and other applicable law? The second purpose is to suggest some alternatives to the present tuna policy and management regime, and to assess the advantages and disadvantages of those alternatives.
