Industry estimates of the hydrocarbon reserve potential for the U.S. sector of the deepwater Gulf of Mexico exceed 20 billion boe. However, the ultra-deep waters of the Gulf remain largely a geological and economic mystery. In order to successfully explore the hydrocarbon reserves of the area, new technologies are being developed to overcome ultra-deepwater exploration obstacles.
