Introduction to advances in seafloor mapping using sidescan sonar and multibeam bathymetry data
This special issue is divided into three sections: data processing and enhancement; seabed classification; and seafloor feature extraction. Section I comprises three papers: shallow-water imaging multibeam sonars; improved processing of Hydrosweep DS multibeam data on the R/V Maurice Ewing; and merged GLORIA sidescan and Hydrosweep pseudo-sidescan - processing and creation of digital mosaics. The second section contains the following three papers: analysis of Simrad EM12 multibeam bathymetry and acoustic backscatter data; side-looking sonar backscatter response at dual frequencies; and objective classification of oceanic ridge-crest terrains. The last section contains three papers covering: processing and analysis of Simrad multibeam sonar data; fault scarp identification and bathymetry images from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge; and automated drainage extraction in mapping the Monterey submarine drainage system.
