A submersible laser-Doppler anemometer which employs a differential detection scheme to cancel laser noise, and a fused optical fiber to transmit scattered light, is used to measure the turbulent energy spectrum in the Pivers Island channel at Beaufort, N. C. The measurements cover three overlapping frequency bands: 0. 025 to 5 Hz, 0. 25 to 50 Hz, and 2. 5 to 500 Hz, and are taken during periods of maximum acceleration and deceleration as well as steady state.
