This paper considers the free vibration of a plane, rectangular, portal frame consisting of slender members. Natural frequencies and mode shapes are influenced by the addition of mass at the corners of the frame. The members are sufficiently slender that axial effects occur, and may ultimately lead to buckling. The results from both theoretical and experimental studies are presented. ©2010 Society for Experimental Mechanics Inc.
