This chapter summarizes criteria necessary for the diagnosis of acute stress disorder, as well as acute and chronic PTSD, early interventions that may prevent the development of chronic PTSD, and psychological as well as pharmacological interventions shown to effectively treat chronic PTSD. In addition, research needed to help develop treatments for relatively treatment resistant populations of PTSD sufferers is outlined. © 2007 Copyright © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
