A case study of a full-scale biotrickling filter for the removal of high loads of hydrogen sulphide contained in biogas is analyzed. Startup, performance and operational and design challenges are analyzed. Also, fundamental aspects in biogas desulfurization such as stoichiometry and microbiology of sulphide-oxidizing biomass are described. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
