We have developed a portable, breast margin assessment probe (BMAP) that surgeons can use to evaluate the breast tumor margin status during surgery. The approach presented here leverages a custom16-channel photodiode array raster-scanning-based system with precision pressure control (ΔP = 1mmHg) and compressive sensing with an optimized set of 8 wavelengths in the visible spectral range. A scalable Monte-Carlo model processes the sub-millimeter (0.75mm) resolution reflectance data, providing detailed optical parameter maps of breast margin morphology (specifically used is the fat to fibroglandular content ratio) over an area of ~ 2x2 cm2 in ~4 minutes.
