Infective endocarditis is a rare and potentially lethal infection involving the heart valves and other cardiac structures. Recent changes in patient characteristics and provision of health care have led to significant shifts in the epidemiology, microbiology, diagnosis, and treatment of infective endocarditis. Risk factors, prognosis, and management differ significantly according to the location and causative pathogen.
