The influence of anisotropy and inhomogeneity of tissue electrical conductivity on the relationship between the threshold current and the electrode-to-fiber distance was determined by computer simulation. Anisotropy affected both the slope and offset of the current-distance curve. Inhomogeneity also affected the slope and offset of the current-distance curves, and in some cases caused reversals in recruitment order. This study demonstrates the importance of accurate representation of tissue electrical properties when modeling extracellular electrical stimulation.
