The committee has written the following laudatio:"Achim Schmid's essay is a lucid analysis of Ukrainian-German author Katja Petrowskaja's recent photo-and-text combinations as well as her account of war photography. Both topical and theoretically informed, Schmid's essay shows how Petrowskaja's photo columns use fragmentary images and writing to represent a war that cannot be fully seen, understood, or narrated as a whole."
