Advising & Mentoring
I am committed to training the next generation of scientists. Since starting my group in 2006, I have trained >15 PhD students who are presently in positions in faculty or postdocs in academia, industry and government and >10 postdoctoral fellows that are faculty in academia, scientists in biotech or still training in my lab now. Trainees in my group meet with me weekly for their scientific projects and quarterly for career development, they have opportunities to get critical feedback in preparing presentations, writing manuscripts and presenting their work in local meetings in the research triangle and national and international meetings. I have chaired a graduate admissions committee for the UNC BBSP graduate program and worked within the UNC Biology department as associate chair for diversity to improve mentoring and inclusivity for the community. I have worked as chair of a committee that designed a reporting system for trainees as well as a lab climate survey tool to assess lab cultures across the department. I have been the recipient of two graduate student mentoring awards (in 2014 and 2020). I have served on many student qualifying exams and thesis committees and taught in responsible conduct in research and cell biology graduate courses. I view graduate and postdoctoral education and mentoring as a central pillar of my professional life.
