Teaching Activities
My courses follow a service-learning framework through which students work in solidarity with community members and organizations. These experiences with community increase personal growth, deepen linguistic and cultural knowledge and provide opportunities for transformative learning.
My current community partnerships include Root Causes, Club Blvd. Elementary School and Iglesia Emanuel. Students work with food pantries, in-classroom mentoring, and K-12 tutoring.
Other innovative partnerships have included the Durham County Public Health Department and the Que Pasa newspaper. Students assisted in the implementation and dissemination of results for the Community Health Assessment to the Durham Spanish-speaking community and in the development of the Sugar Smart Durham campaign. Students also partnered with the Raleigh-based Spanish-language newspaper, Que Pasa, and a journalist from the Charlotte-based Spanish-language newspaper, Mundo Hispánico, to develop and publish articles written by undergraduate students.
