Service to the Community ; The Duke Center for Science Education's new science summer camp at Duke for rising 8th graders, from all over the US, who like science but can't yet see themselves choosing a science career. Theme this year was The Five Senses: How They Help Us Make Sense of Science. Led a hands-on activity for ~10 students teaching them how to analyze Drosophila nocifensive behavior.

Service to the Community ; I run a day long workshop for 3rd-6th grade girls once a year for the FEMMES program, called "The Fly and I." In each session the girls learn how to use microscopes to look for mutations in fruit flies, about the similarities between flies and humans, and why fruit flies are useful to study (and should not be abhorred). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiAoLV9IP5U&feature=related ; http://www.duke.edu/web/FEMMES/index.html
