Research Interests
Book project, co-authored with Mark Antliff, Anarchist Photography and 20th-century Modernism (working title):
Considering a range of figures across Europe and North America, this book will explore the importance of a richly politicized aspect of the history of photography—until now largely overlooked—that was ambitious to effect social change in the face of war, colonialism and economic injustice. An equal aim was to effect aesthetic change within the medium, expand the intolerant limits on its critical interpretation, and create modernist photography whose practitioners operated as co-equal artists in the radical avant-gardes.
