The Joys and Challenges of Community Engaged Learning · October 6, 2020 Invited Talk Stanford University,

Community engaged learning can take many forms, from service-learning classes to stand alone community-based research. The core challenge is to ethically and equitably meet the needs of the students, faculty, and partners. Universities have long used communities as subjects of research for academic advancement, but integrating community work into student coursework such that the community partners are co-designers and co-leaders of the experience is a more just and sustainable approach. Community engaged learning also provides emotional connections that build deep and enduring learning in student participants and leverages community knowledge that might be unknown to an academic PI. I have been doing community engaged learning for 20 years both with courses at Duke and with a community partner in rural Kenya and it has been one of my most fulfilling professional experiences.

Outreach & Engaged Scholarship

Director - Virtual DukeEngage · 2021 Projects & Field Work Duke and WISER Kenya , virtual flag Kenya Given that travel to Kenya was not allowed during 2021 I piloted an innovative zoom-based research and service experience for Duke students and girls in rural Kenya. We successfully completed two international team-based STEM projects with Duke students mentoring girls at the WISER school: design and construction of a passive solar water heater for home use; and understanding function and coding for an aerial drone for monitoring of gendered space in the Muhuru Bay area. Non-STEM projects included working with WISER girls to improve spoken and written English for national exams, and working in teams to produce culturally-anchored sexual, reproductive health and rights curricula. We also built capacity by teaching local leaders how to use Canva to produce their own materials year round. A final research project was analyzing data from 2019 on the impact of WISER's clean water distribution system.
