This procedure was first performed by Riedel in 1888 for an impacted common bile duct stone. The main principle of the procedure is that a side-to-side anastomosis is designed to allow free flow of bile from the common bile duct into the duodenum. © 2007 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
