We present a novel subcutaneous biophotonics sensor system for continuous monitoring of hemodynamic parameters in animals. This sensor incorporates surface-mount light sources and photodetectors in the form factors of glass capsules used for microchip implants containing radio frequency identification integrated circuits. In this study, we investigated the potential of such capsules to perform reflectance-based pulse oximetry measurements and the possibility of using inductive coupling to power such systems.
