Effect of feeding retinol (50000 I.U.) or retinoic acid (5 mg) for two days on brain cerebrosides and sulphatides of rats maintained on 20, 5 and 0 % casein diet for two weeks was studied. The incorporation of 35S sulphate into brain sulphatides of rats maintained on 20 % casein diet and fed retinol (50000 I.U.) for two days has also been studied. Retinol significantly decreased brain cerebrosides and sulphatides in rats fed 20 % casein diet and increased in rats maintained on protein free diets. Retinol did not affect the levels of these glycolipids in rats fed 5 % casein diet. Retinoic acid did not affect brain sulphatides and cerebrosides of rats fed casein diets at different levels. Incorporation of 35S sulphate into brain sulphatides of rats fed 20 % casein diet and given retinol was significantly reduced 48 hr after the injection of the isotope, but was not significantly different from the control 6, 12, 24 and 36 hr after the injection of the isotope.
