Manganese-lead mixed oxide catalysts for decomposition of hydrogen peroxide

Alumina-supported manganese-lead oxide catalysts were prepared, and their activity for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide was assessed by the refractometric method. Lead oxide as an additive promotes remarkably the activity of manganese oxide and the catalyst with an equimolar ratio of manganese oxide and lead oxide exhibits the highest activity. This synergistic effect is explained by the formation of a new mixed oxide phase. XRD analysis shows that a new phase of PbMnO2(OH) may be formed for the catalyst with Mn/Pb molar ratio of 1, which may be responsible for the high activity for catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. In addition, different from the MnO2/Al2O3, PbO/Al2O3 and MnO2-PbO/Al2O3 with Mn/Pb ratios other than 1 where two or three peaks are observed in the TPR profiles, the MnO2-PbO/ Al2O3 catalyst with Mn/Pb ratio of 1 exhibits only one peak in its TPR profile, which is consistent with the XRD results.
