Sympathetic heating spectroscopy: Probing molecular ions with laser-cooled atomic ions

Sympathetic heating spectroscopy measures atomic and molecular ion spectra by observing the heating of a laser-cooled control ion. Limits of the method are tested using two isotopes of calcium. Applications for molecular ions are discussed. © 2010 OSA /FiO/LS 2010.
