Different scan protocols are useful when performing optical coherence tomography (OCT) on a cooperative patient who is able to fixate versus on an infant or young child. Although there are overlaps in scan acquisition patterns across different commercial systems, the interpretation of the OCT frequently requires scans of the retina, the optic nerve, the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), and the macular map. Before obtaining images on any infant or child, the imager should have a plan or protocol of a series of OCT scans in advance to facilitate efficiency and ensure complete OCT documentation.
