Fertilization and embryogenesis
This chapter takes the reader through the earliest stages of reproduction, including gamete formation, fertilization with embryo development, and development of the urogenital system. The chapter has been updated to describe the role of assisted reproductive technologies in human reproduction, which has led to a greater understanding of preimplantation embryo development. New information has been added regarding the expanding field of molecular biology in understanding sexual differentiation. Information of implantation including trophoblastic invasion and embryo-endometrial interaction has been expanded. The timing of teratogenicity and abnormalities of genital development are described along with basic information on organogenesis of the urogenital tract.
