Subtle refinements in the surgical technique have contributed to the significant improvements in the early survival of lung transplant recipients. Current survival data from our center demonstrate 30-day and 1-year survivals of 98% and 89%, respectively. This is significantly better than expected survival based upon center-specific patient acuity. This discussion will begin with a description of our preferred method of implantation, followed by alternatives due to particular patient characteristics. Alternative techniques described in the literature, but that our center does not routinely employ, will also be presented.
