Children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN) are defined as children “who have or are at increased risk for chronic physical, developmental, behavioral or emotional conditions and who also require health and related services of a type or amount beyond that required by children generally” (McPherson et al., 1998). This definition is intentionally inclusive for the purpose of public health research, healthcare policy, and providing services for this at-risk population. CYSHCN encompass a wide range of abilities and needs.
