Methods of Hemodialysis Anticoagulation

Exposure of blood during the hemodialysis procedure to the extracorporeal circuit increases the risk of clotting in the circuit and inefficient treatment. We review current anticoagulation protocols used most in outpatient and inpatient hemodialysis units. These include heparin, no-heparin, citrate protocols, as well as alternative anticoagulants.
