Disk herniations can occur in any portion of the spine. When focal disk herniations cause narrowing of the neural foramina, radicular pain or radiculopathy is a common symptom. Knowledge of spinal anatomy, along with pertinent use of physical examination maneuvers, is essential in working up radicular symptoms. This condition can interfere with simple activities of daily living and can be debilitating for patients. Providers should offer a thorough diagnostic workup and multimodal treatment options.
