Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that presents in childhood and is characterized by restricted, repetitive behaviors and impairments in social communication. The exact cause in unknown, but genetic and immunologic factors are thought to play a role. Cellular therapies, including umbilical cord blood and mesenchymal stromal cells, are being investigated as potential treatments for ASD. While they appear to be safe in early phase studies, the effectiveness of such therapies is still under the subject of clinical trials.
