A Smart Patient Initiated Controlled Analgesic Recording Dispenser (PICARD) for Prescription Abuse Prevention
In recent years, addiction to prescribed controlled substances, particularly opioids, has become a severe problem in the United States. The medical community and government officials are concerned about the abuse of these medications, whether it be through overdosing or illegal distribution, as it has increased deaths by 1000% in the last two decades. We propose a Patient Initiated Controlled Analgesic Recording Dispenser (PICARD) with bio-metric fingerprint verification and locks that can maintain a medication schedule without the abuse or illegal distribution of medication. With PICARD's IoT connectivity to a mobile application and a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliant cloud storage server, healthcare providers can have real-time feedback and dosage adjustments based on system-generated analytics. Implementing systems like PICARD can significantly reduce the likelihood of medication abuse and addiction.
