Soft tissue reconstruction of achilles-tendon-associated wounds
Soft tissue defects overlying the Achilles tendon pose a distinct challenge for both orthopedic and reconstructive surgeons. Stable soft tissue coverage facilitates proper tendon excursion, prevents desiccation, and provides durable tissue for shoe wearing and ambulation. Reconstructive options exist along the entire spectrum of the reconstructive ladder, from superficial soft tissue defects managed nonoperatively to free tissue transfer for composite defects with tendon loss or injury. Familiarity with potential reconstructive options for Achilles-tendon-associated wounds is essential for both plastic and orthopedic surgeons alike. This chapter provides an overview of the reconstructive options for the soft tissue reconstruction of Achilles-tendon-associated wounds.
