Over one-half of all registered nurse turnover is generated by those within their first 2 years of practice. Common strategies to retain new graduate nurses are ineffective and our baseline study found 3 themes that contributed to this turnover: disrupted work culture, inexperienced workforce, and intentional support. Using a pre-post intervention design, we implemented a Transition to Practice intervention to address these themes and evaluated its impact on tenure of registered nurses within their first 18 months of practice. In a multivariable model, tenure was significantly improved for nurses completing all of the modules (p < .001, 95% CI 0.184-0.570).
