How to Set Up an Endobronchial Ultrasound Program
The development of a successful endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) program requires appropriate planning, including a comprehensive assessment of the community needs for the proposed services. A needs assessment will inform the development of a feasible business plan and allow a strategic, fiscally responsible approach to request, secure, and maintain essential equipment, procedure suite space, and support staff necessary for a durable EBUS program. Once an EBUS program is initiated, it is important to continuously monitor program metrics and procedural/patient outcomes that will instruct continuous improvements to the EBUS program and ensure effective, high-quality patient care. Providing optimal patient care, combined with effective communication, can enhance the positive reputation of the EBUS program during its initial development stages and promote future growth. This chapter provides a guide for assessing and addressing these needs to successfully set up and run an EBUS program.
