Pearls of Wisdom for New and Aspiring Graduate Deans on Transitioning Into a Graduate Deanship
Abstract – The chapter provides an in-depth guide for individuals transitioning into the role of a graduate school dean. Drawing from personal experiences, the author shares insights on navigating the challenges and responsibilities of the position, particularly from the perspective of a Black woman who has held similar roles at multiple institutions. The chapter covers various aspects of the transition, including understanding institutional differences, building relationships with staff and colleagues, managing political dynamics, and leveraging support networks. It emphasizes the importance of reflection, adaptability, and resilience in successfully leading a graduate school. The chapter also provides practical advice on preparing for the role, conducting a listening tour, getting to know the staff, and managing relationships with supervisors and colleagues. Additionally, the chapter offers specific guidance for Black graduate deans at historically white institutions, highlighting the importance of external and internal support networks. Overall, the chapter is intended as a resource for new and aspiring graduate deans, offering a comprehensive overview of the transition process and practical tips for success.
