Interactions between memory and reward systems
Selectivity is essential for an adaptive memory system. Here, we review how neural systems underlying reward and motivation can interact with memory systems to support prioritized memory for ‘valuable’ information and tailor the format of memory to support future behavior. This chapter will introduce key theoretical frameworks grounded in neurobiology, followed by a review of evidence in humans showing reward and motivational influences on memory processing. We will also discuss how learning and memory disorders can stem from dysfunctions in reward systems, and consider potential therapeutic interventions. By reviewing the interaction between reward and memory systems, this chapter aims to provide a foundation for understanding how memory can be adaptive.
