Spiro[4.5]decanes by photoannelation. Total synthesis of (-)-acorenone

An efficient synthesis of the optically active spiro[4.5]decane sesquiterpene acorenone is described. The key carbon-carbon bonds are formed by a (2+2) photochemical cycloaddition between 2,2-dimethyl-3(2H)-furanone and an alkene derived from limonene. © 1982.
