Intramolecular oxidative transformations of l,4-diaryl-2,3-dimethyl-2,3-epoxybutane with DDQ

Treatment of 1,4-diaryl-2,3-dimethyl-2,3-epoxide of butane(l) with 2,3- dichloro-5. 6-dicyano-1. 4-benzoquinone(DDQ) in trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) furnishes a new benzofuran type lignan (2). The structure of (2) was established by MS, IR, UV and NMR spectra, and X-ray crystallographic analysis.
