This paper examines the relationship between industrial productivity and employment, and the utilization of the emerging technologies in automation and computer-integrated manufacturing. These technologies include robotics and other programmable techniques for flexible manufacturing. First, the current state of robotic technology is briefly described. Next, the impact of automation on productivity is discussed. Finally, various aspects of industrial employment affected by the introduction of automation and computer-integrated technologies are presented.
