The goals and features of the Engineering Research Centers (ERC) Program, which was created in 1985 to improve engineering research and education in the US, are discussed. The creative approaches the centers have applied to research management, education, and technology transfer are reviewed. A list, including brief descriptions, of all the current Engineering Research Centers is presented
