The authors review the evidence relating minimum measured intratumoral temperature and percentage of measured sites exceeding 42. 5 degree C (ETV) to response of tumors treated with radiation and hyperthermia. Sources of intertreatment and intratreatment variation in observed temperature distributions are summarized, and several types of variation are illustrated. Improved quality control of treatments as well as measurements of blood perfusion distribution are necessary to develop further a science of thermal dosimetry yielding prognostically important dose-effect relationships.
