Automated lateral rotational therapy in the intensive care unit

Turning patients on a frequent basis reduces some of the respiratory complications associated with immobility. With automated rotational therapy the frequency of turning can be increased to several times per hour. However cost and patient tolerance need to be considered and often individual turning strategies are required. Automated lateral rotational therapy is probably best restricted to those patients likely to remain immobile for prolonged periods of time on mechanical ventilation.
