With the increasing number of immunocompromised hosts and advances in medical technology there has been a concomitant rise in the number of cases of invasive fungal infections. Novel approaches for the discovery of new antifungal targets and their inhibitors will be needed. In this review we discuss how such approaches are being developed through the identification of novel biochemical and molecular targets to meet the challenges imposed by the scientific research in medical mycology. © 2000 Ashley Publications Ltd.
