The computational demands imposed by the large number of markers considered in a genome-wide association study (GWAS) have resulted in an extreme simplification in the types of analyses conducted. While sophisticated methodology may be used to adjust for multiple comparisons, most studies are analyzed one marker at a time using simple tests such as the Cochran-Armitage trend test. Though computationally simple, a significant limitation of such an analysis paradigm is its failure to efficiently use the information contained in the GWAS sample. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
