We report techniques for the design of active and tunable RF metamaterials and measurements of their novel properties, including frequency agile metamaterials in which each element is individually computer controlled with a nonvolatile state memory, powered active metamaterials containing embedded amplifiers, and parametrically pumped nonlinear active metamaterials. © 2011 IEEE.
