Using the total genome scan strategy with the rat animal model, the regions of the genome containing quantitative trait loci (QTLs) responsible for more than 300 phenotypes have been identified. We (more than 100 people from 14 institutions) have studied seven different crosses, FHHxACI, GHxBN, LHxLN, SHRxBN, SHRxDRY, SHRxWKY and SS/McwxBN, where the first strain is the hypertensive and the second one is the normotensive. Each phenotype was considered to be unique since none of the phenotyping protocols were identical. We have carried out scans using 121 to 336 genetic markers. Phenotype Cross Chromosomes (LOD) Tail BP (SBP) THHxACI 1 (4.2) Tail BP (SBP) GHxBN 2 (3.59), 6 (4.66), 18 (4.28) SBP LHxLN 2 (2.14), 5 (2.37), 12 (2.52), 13 (5.56) MAP SHRxBN 1 (2.6), 11 (3.16) MAP SHRxDRY 1 (4.4) MAP SHRxWKY 1 (4.43) SBP SS/McwxBN 3 (4.2), 4 (4.15), 18 (4.16) These data illustrate the power of looking at several crosses simultaneously, and may indicate the major genes responsible for blood pressure regulation in humans.
